Wasserschildkröten im Winter
A cold winter of turtles is contrary to the opinion in many books a sickening attitude error. Because they are cold-blooded animals, they need heat for their metabolism. When it is cold your immune system suffers and their life expectancy is reduced by about 10 years. Also, the risk of pneumonia and fungal infections is much greater. In addition, the turtles killed in cold rigid easy prey for rats from which they can be eaten. Also frostbite of the eyes or eyelids may occur.
The optimal air and water temperature is 28 -30 degrees, so most effectively prevented disease.
Very good information on keeping turtles and a sanctuary for turtles in distress can be found at http://www.wasserschildkroete.de/
